Treating Sleep Apnoea and Snoring
Do you often feel exhausted? Is fatigue affecting you on a daily basis? You may suffer from obstructive sleep apnoea, a breathing disorder which obstructs the breathing in some people when they sleep.
Sleep apnoea is caused by the airways collapsing throughout the night and is often linked with snoring and other symptoms. The collapsed airways can make the loose soft tissues in your throat vibrate, producing the snoring sound. However, snoring can often be a sign of the more serious condition, obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). As the muscles of the throat and tongue relax, the blockage of the airway causes temporary pauses to your breathing. This results in less oxygen reaching the brain.
As the restriction on your throat results in an insufficient flow of oxygen to the brain, your brain will force your body to spasm and momentarily wake up before resuming a normal breathing pattern. This process can take place numerous times throughout the night, without you even realising. Because you have had an inconsistent rest and interrupted sleeping patterns, during the hours of the day you’ll likely feel sleepy and even agitated.
Untreated sleep apnoea can lead to serious health concerns such as high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney problems and other systemic issues. Common symptoms of sleep apnoea include snoring, waking up feeling thirsty or dehydrated, or a constant feeling of fatigue.
Mandibular advancement splints for obstructive sleep apnoea
For some patients, a mandibular advancement splint may be a suitable treatment to help address their sleep apnoea. Mandibular advancement splints fit into the mouth a little like a mouthguard. They are worn during sleep, and work by adjusting the position of the jaw to stop the airway closing.
What is sleep apnoea?
Sleep apnoea is a breathing disorder in which the airway collapses at night, causing breathing to become obstructed during sleep. When the airway narrows and the loose soft tissues in the throat begin to vibrate, snoring occurs. Obstructions in the airways also cause temporary pauses in one’s breathing, which may lead to disruptions in sleep, and may have many other effects on other systems in the body, resulting in symptoms such as constant fatigue.
What causes sleep apnoea and what happens if untreated?
There are a number of factors which may cause the condition and excess weight and obesity can be exacerbating factors. Other factors such as a large tongue, position of jaws and as a result teeth position, very large tonsils/adenoids and bad posture can also be contributing factors.
If left untreated, sleep apnoea can lead to some serious health complications, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, weight gain, gastric reflux, glaucoma, macular degeneration, ADHD, headaches, frequent night-time urination, bedwetting in children, and chronic pain
How can sleep apnoea be treated?
In some cases, a mandibular advancement splint may be helpful in treating the sleep disorder. The splint is specially and very carefully designed to fit into an individual’s mouth, much like a mouth guard, and works by adjusting the position of the jaw to prevent the airways from closing during sleep. The appliance helps to maintain a patent airway, allowing patients to enjoy undisturbed sleep and relief from snoring.
