Traditional Metal Braces

Traditional braces are still the most common orthodontic method to correctly align teeth, establish a functional bite and create a beautiful natural smile.

In recent years, the technology behind traditional metal braces has progressed rapidly and now, even greater results can be achieved. As traditional braces have been around for quite some time, they have been perfected to offer the most optimal results.

When compared to other systems, traditional metal braces can fix mild to severe orthodontic problems like a misaligned jaw, severely crooked teeth or an overbite or underbite.

How do traditional metal braces work?

Traditional metal braces are created with a series of attachments, called brackets that are securely glued to the front of your teeth. Strong dental wire called an archwire is placed over the top of these brackets into a small groove in the bracket and held in place by small elastic bands called o-rings.

These archwires will act as a guide for your teeth to move along. The archwires are capable of generating a powerful pulling force to move your teeth into their desired position over a relatively short amount of time.

Your braces will be at work every moment of your orthodontic treatment.

What are the benefits of traditional braces?

There are many advantages that metal braces have over other brace options which include:

  • Strength – metal is very strong compared to other orthodontic treatment options and is less prone to chipping or breaking.
  • Affordability – traditional metal braces still remain one of the most affordable treatment options when choosing to straighten your teeth.
  • Versatility – metal braces can fix mild to severe cases of misaligned, crooked, spaced out and crowded teeth.
  • Speed – straightening your teeth with metal braces is typically faster than other brace options.

How long will I have my braces on for?

The time a patient needs to wear their metal braces will depend on a range of factors including the severity of their orthodontic concerns. Your age also comes into consideration as younger jaws and teeth are easier to manipulate into position than fully grown adult bone.

Treatment time for Dental Pearl’s patients can range anywhere from around six months to 30 months.

Do braces hurt?

Fitting the brackets and wires onto your smile doesn’t hurt, but the teeth usually start to have a slight ache a few hours later. This slight discomfort can be managed with analgesics and over the counter pain relief.

Braces are not like they used to be and the latest “high tech” wires will reduce the forces applied to your teeth while acting over a greater range of movement. This means far less discomfort and much shorter treatment times. Although, the lips and inside the cheeks may need a few days to get used to the braces.
